December Den Meeting Followup

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

Thanks again to Chip S. (Reece's dad) for organizing another fun den meeting!  We got to practice a cubscout flag ceremony and learn about the United States flag (Achievement 2D).  We also had a great time making and testing some really cool paper airplanes.  Before our next den meeting, everyone should complete the "Looking at a Map" family activity (Achievement 2F) for the "Where I Live" unit in the Tiger Handbook.

We also had a great Go See It to the Worthington Fire Department (Achievement 2G), where we got to climb on a fire truck, try out some equipment and tour the house where all the firefighters live.  Thanks to Shaneh R. (Christopher's mom) for planning that for us!

We now just have one more unit left to complete in the Tiger Handbook before we earn our Tiger Cub badges! Remember, any of the achievements that you may have missed can be made up on your own fairly quickly and easily.  It's up to you to determine whether or not your son has fulfilled the objective of the achievements in a particular unit.  So, if you are unable to do something on your own exactly as it is described in the handbook, the most important thing is to fulfill the spirit of the lesson or value that the achievement is trying to teach.  (Please feel free to talk to me about making up the achievements, if you have any questions.)

Please remember that our next Pack Meeting is this Wednesday, December 14, at 7:00 PM in Visitation Hall.  We will be having our Raingutter Regatta and Chili Cook-Off at this meeting.  Please bring your boat (if you made yours - if not, come anyway!), and a two liter drink to share.  Also, if you plan to bring chili, you should bring it hot (there won't be enough plugs for everyone to plug in a Crockpot), and remember to bring a serving spoon and any condiments you want to serve with it.

Here are some other important dates to put on your calendar:
  • Dec 14: Raingutter Regatta and Chili Cook-Off (Visitation Hall) 7:00 PM
  • Dec 17: Pinewood Derby Make-It Take-It (Visitation Hall) 8:00 AM-Noon.  Volunteers will be on hand to help with the preparation of your Pinewood Derby cars.  They'll be doing everything there (cutting out your shapes, drilling for the wheels, adding weights, etc.) except the painting!
  • Jan 10: Den Meeting (Visitation Hall) 7:00 PM
I'll see you all at the Pack Meeting on Wednesday!

December 11 - Go See It: Worthington Fire Dept (Norton Commons)

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

I have scheduled our Go See It for December; we will be visiting a fire station (Achievement 2G). It will be on Sunday December 11 at 1:00 pmWe are going to the Worthington Fire Department in Norton Commons.  The address is 9514 Featherbell Blvd.

The person that I talked to said that the on duty fire crew will have to be responding to runs as needed during this time, but hopefully they will be able to give us a tour and talk to the boys for a bit.  He said it would take about one hour.

I guess it would be helpful if everyone could let me know if they can come or not, so I can give them a number of how many boys to expect.

Make sure you go to the one in Norton Commons, as there are several Worthington stations.

Thanks, hope you all can make it!

Shaneh R. (Christopher's mom)

December 6 - Den Meeting

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

Our next den meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00 PM in Visitation Hall  (Cafeteria).

Chip S. (Reece's dad) will be planning this meeting.  We will be a flag ceremony and learning about the Pledge of Allegiance (Achievement 2D).

Also, please try to complete the Unit 5: "Let's Go Outdoors" family activity by going outside and observing the weather (Achievement 5F).  Remember to bring your Tiger Handbooks to this and every den meeting, so that I can sign off on any of the achievements you've completed with your son and give him the beads for his totem.

See you all on Tuesday!

November Den Meeting Followup

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

Thanks again to Luke J. (Luke's dad) for organizing a great den meeting!  We all had a blast making our leaf rubbings and conducting our Hot Wheels science experiments.  Before our next den meeting, everyone should complete the "Observing the Weather" family activity (Achievement 5F) for the "Let's Go Outdoors" unit in the Tiger Handbook.

We also had a great Go See It to the UofL ice hockey game this past Saturday (Achievement 5G), where we watched the Cards pull off an exciting 6-5 win in a shootout over Wright State.  Thanks to Elizabeth R. (Andy's mom) for planning that for us!

We have now completed three of the five units in the Tiger Handbook and are more than half way to earning our Tiger Cub badges!  If you have not yet completed all of the achievements in Units 1, 3 and 5, you might want to take some time over the Thanksgiving break to catch up with the rest of the den.  Any of the achievements that you may have missed can be made up on your own fairly quickly and easily.  Just follow the instructions in the handbook.

Please remember that our next Pack Meeting is this Wednesday, November 23rd, at 7:00 PM in Visitation Hall.  LG&E will be setting up their "Safety City," and we will be awarding belt loops to everyone who gave me their list.

Here are some other important dates to put on your calendar:
  • Dec 6: Den Meeting (Visitation Hall) 7:00 PM - Chip S. (Reece)
  • Dec 10: Bell Ringing (Kroger across from Summit) 12:00 PM
  • Dec 11: Go See It (Worthington Fire Dept @ Norton Commons) 1:00 PM - Shaneh R. (Christopher)
  • Dec 14: Pack Meeting & Chili Cook-off (Visitation Hall) 7:00 PM
I'll see you all at the Pack Meeting on Wednesday!

November 19 - Go See It: UofL Ice Hockey (Alpine Ice Arena)

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

This month's go see it activity will be to go to a UofL Ice Hockey game.  I know I had talked with some parents about seeing a high school (or even a St. Albert's) basketball game, but most of those do not start until December.  This event sounds like a lot of fun.

It will be next Saturday, November 19th, at 5:45pm at Alpine Ice Arena on Gardiner Lane.  The teams start to warm up around 5:30, so it is recommended to arrive by 5:20.  Children 12 and under are free (so please feel welcome to bring siblings) and the cost for adults is $4.00.  (This price is discounted $1.00 for our group.)  I need to have a number of how many are going by Tuesday about 5:00pm to ensure that all of our group can sit together.  If you have any questions, please email or call me.

Andy is looking forward to this, and I hope you all can go!

Thanks,
Elizabeth R. (Andy's mom)

Directions:

I-264, take Exit 16 (Bardstown Road North) then turn Right to Bardstown Rd (US-150/US-31E)
After 100 feet, turn left at first light on Gardiner Ln
Continue W on Gardiner Ln until you reach 1825 Gardiner Ln (on right)

Belt Loops!

If your boys are like mine, they're very anxious to get some of those belt loops that they keep hearing about and seeing the older scouts wearing.  Well, they will finally get their chance at the November pack meeting (Wednesday, November 23 at 7:00 PM in Visitation Hall)!

The Pack has decided to pay for five (5) belt loops for every cubscout each year they are in the pack.  So, if they continue on to be Wolf Scouts and Bear Scouts, they will have the opportunity to earn 15 belt loops (paid for by the Pack).

There is a link on the Den website to the belt loop requirements.  All of the requirements should be listed there (except for the archery and bb-gun shooting belt loops, which can only be earned at a Council sponsored camp or JamboRama).

There is no paperwork for you to fill out.  Simply look over the list of belt loops and their requirements.  Then send me an e-mail of up to 5 belt loops that your son has earned and would like to receive at the November pack meeting.

If they haven't earned a total of 5 belt loops yet, or if you would rather they not get their allotment for the year all at one time, we'll hand them out again at another pack meeting in the Spring.

If they've earned more than 5 belt loops already, help them narrow their list down to the 5 they really want to receive first.  If you want them to receive more than 5 in a single year, you can reimburse the pack for the cost of the additional belt loops, and we'll award them in the Spring.  But remember, they can probably only fit so many loops on their belts, and it might be a good idea to give them something to look forward to earning over the next two years they're in scouts.

So, please send me your list of up to 5 belt loops as soon as you can (I'll have to get them ordered from the Scout Store).  And if you have any questions, please let me know.

November 15 - Den Meeting

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

Our next den meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 15th at 7:00 PM in Hendrick's HallThis is the basement of the kindergarten building.  Sorry to keep moving the meeting around, but Visitation Hall (Cafeteria) is booked that night.  We will continue to try to reserve Visitation Hall for any upcoming meetings at St. Albert's, so that we have more room to spread out.  Please continue to check the website for details on upcoming meetings.

Luke J. (Luke's dad) will be planning this meeting.  We will be making leaf rubbings (Achievement 5D), so please bring a couple of leaves with you to the meeting!  Luke also says he has some science experiments planned for us, if we have time, so the boys can work on their science belt loops.

Also, please try to complete the Unit 3: "Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe" family activities by planning and practicing a family fire drill and talking about what to do if your Tiger Cub ever becomes lost or separated from his family (Achievements 3Fa and 3Fb).  Remember to bring your Tiger Handbooks to this and every den meeting, so that I can sign off on any of the achievements you've completed with your son and give him the beads for his totem.

See you all on the 15th!

October Den Meeting Followup

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

I was glad to see so many of you last night at our second den meeting, especially considering the last minute change in date and the cold, wet weather.

We started the "Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe" unit by making healthy food pyramids (Achievement 3D).  If you were unable to attend the meeting, please complete this activity on your own at home.

Before our next den meeting, please complete the family activities by planning and practicing a family fire drill and talking about what to do if your Tiger Cub ever becomes lost or separated from his family (Achievements 3Fa and 3Fb).

Please keep in mind these important dates for upcoming events:

Oct 26: Pack Meeting/Halloween Party (6:30 PM in the Cafeteria).  All of the boys will be receiving their Bobcat Badge at this meeting!

Oct 30: Go See It: Hike in the Park (12:30 PM at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park). Bring a lunch.  We will be completing Achievement 5G and collecting leaves for our November den meeting.

I think we're off to a great start for the year!  Hopefully, you and your boys are having fun in Tiger Scouts.  As always, please let me know, if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

October 30 - Go See It: Hike in E.P. Tom Sawyer Park

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

Mindy M. (Nicholas' mom) has planned our next Go See It for Sunday, October 30th, at 12:30 PM at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.  We will be going on a hike in the Park!

Directions to E.P. Tom Sawyer Park: Take Freys Hill Rd. Go to main entrance parking.  We will meet at the picnic shelter/playground.  Bring a sack lunch and plenty of water. We will eat lunch first and go over hiking safety.  We will leave for the hike around 1:00 or 1:15.  This is a BEAUTIFUL hike! The hike takes about an hour to walk.  We will also stop a few times to observe nature and collect leaves to make leaf rubbings at our next den meeting. We should be back to the parking lot no later than 3:00 PM.  This is a very easy hike.  There are few hills, and our biggest obstacle is roots to step over.  There are also a lot of squishy mud areas as well, so please don't wear your good shoes!

I don't think we need to take water with us, if we hydrate well before we go.  You are more than welcome to bring it if you wish.  Every scout needs an adult partner and siblings are welcome if you feel they are old enough to handle the hike.

This activity will fulfill Achievement 5G, along with the Hiking belt loop.

October 19 - Den Meeting

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

Our next den meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 18th 19th, at 7:00 PM in Visitation Hall (cafeteria) at St. Albert the Great.  Please bring your popcorn order forms and a check made payable to "Pack 327" for the entire sum of all your orders, as the orders are due by October 19th.

Don't forget that your scouts may wear their uniforms to school on the day of our den meeting.

At this meeting, we will be working on achievement 3D, drawing a food pyramid.  By now, everyone should have completed all three of the "Making My Family Special" achievements in the Tiger Handbook.  As you complete each achievement with your scout, please sign the appropriate page in their handbook.  I will be checking everyone's books and handing out beads for their totems at the den meeting.

Also, the October pack meeting has been rescheduled to October 26th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.  This will be our pack Halloween party.  There will be a pumpkin decorating contest, and the boys may wear their costumes for trunk or treating!

October 1 - Go See It: Frazier History Musuem

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

I have planned the first "Go See It" for our den for Saturday, October 1st. We will be going to the Frazier History Museum. The plan is for us to experience the museum from 2pm-4pm that day. The museum contact recommended that time related to what is being offered that day. From 2p-2:45 we will have time to explore the exhibits at the museum. From 2:45p-3:15p someone from their historical interpretation area will be presenting an "armor cart", which will have replicas of weapons that the boys can see. And at 3:30p they will be showing an Elizabethan sword fight.

The group rate that I have arranged with the museum is $6/per visitor, and children 4 and under will be free. You are welcome to bring siblings and other family members on our outing.

Parking is $3/vehicle and is in the rear of the museum. Coming down Main Street, you will turn right onto 9th street, and I am told that 9th street then dead ends into the parking lot.

The reservation is for Tiger Den 327 at 2pm on 10/1/11. I hope to see you there and look forward to a great outing. You may email me if you have any questions.

 Thank you,

Susan M. (Xavier's mom)

Please RSVP to Susan by Wednesday, September 29th.

September Den Meeting Followup

We're off to an excellent start, with all 19 boys attending the first den meeting!

Everyone completed the Bobcat Trail requirements and will be eligible to receive the Bobcat Badge at the next pack meeting on October 19.

Everyone also did an excellent job starting their family scrapbooks (Achievement 1D) and should have received their Tiger Cub totem and first orange bead.

Please think of an at-home chore you can do with your son (Achievement 1F) and complete it together before the next den meeting to earn your first white bead.  Refer to the Tiger Cub Handbook for more details.

We have tentatively planned our first Go See It to the Frazier History Museum (Achievement 1G) on Saturday, October 1.  Susan M. (Xavier's mom) is working on the arrangements.  We'll send a separate announcement when the plans are set.  If you cannot attend this outing with the rest of the den, you may complete the requirement on your own before the next den meeting to earn your first black bead. Refer to the Tiger Cub Handbook for more details.

We will be attending the JamboRama at Churchill downs as a pack from October 7-9.  This will be your chance to let the boys shoot those bows and arrows and BB-guns that they've all been looking forward to!  This will also count as our Fall pack campout, for those who wish to "rough it" for a night or two in the infield.  (More information will be sent out about this event soon.)

As always, please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions.

September 20 - 1st Den Meeting

Our first den meeting will be Tuesday, September 20th at 7:00 PM in the basement of Hendrick's Hall.

The theme for this meeting will be the Bobcat Trail and "Making My Family Special."

Before the meeting, please review the Bobcat requirements in the Tiger Cub Handbook (pp 29-34).  We will also go over these during the meeting.  The plan is for all the boys to receive their Bobcat badge at the next pack meeting in October.

At this meeting we will also be starting our Tiger Cub family scrapbooks (Achievement 1D).  You and your tiger cub are encouraged to keep your scrapbook updated with pictures and mementos from some of your scouting achievements and experiences throughout the year.  We'll try to make time at some of our future den meetings for the boys to bring their scrapbooks in for "show and tell."

Please bring the following scrapbook supplies with you to the meeting:
  • Three ring binder
  • One or more family pictures (to be cut and glued into the scrapbook)
  • Stickers (or other items to decorate the cover and inside of your scrapbook)
I will bring white copy paper, some colored construction paper and a three-hole punch.  I will also try to bring some crayons, markers, scissors and glue sticks to share.  You may also wish to bring in your own paper, markers, scissors, and other supplies to work with or share - the more we have on hand, the better!

Also, if scrapbooking is one of your hobbies, please feel free help lead this activity!  If you have your own special scrapbooking talents, techniques or supplies, now would be the time to show them off and share with the rest of the den!

Finally, I'd like to have a fun activity for the boys to do outside, while we take care of some "parent" business (I'll have a sign up sheet for everyone to volunteer to lead an activity or "Go See It" at each of our future den meetings).  I will bring a washer toss game, which is fun, easy and quick to setup.  If anyone else has a washer toss set they could bring, we could get several games going at once. Or, you may wish to bring another favorite "backyard" game (but please let me know, if you're planning on bringing a game - we don't need 20 different things).

See you Tuesday!

September 14 - 1st Pack Meeting

Our first Pack meeting will be Wednesday, September 14th at 6:30 PM in Warwick Park. We will be launching 2-liter plastic bottles with water! If you're planning on stopping by after your sports practice, you're welcome to do so.  I'm told the fun will last until at least 8:00 PM.

Remember, the boys can wear their Tiger Cub uniform to school that day.

Please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions. See you there!
