May 17-19 - Spring Pack Camp Out

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas:

Our final Pack event for the school-year will be the Spring Pack Camp Out from Friday, May 17, to Sunday, May 19.  We will be camping out again at the Sycamore Springs Park, located at 717 West Tunnel Hill Road in English, IN.

Alex Kuprion, our Cubmaster, will be heading down Friday after school to set up our campsite.  You may camp out Friday night, Saturday night, or both nights.  I will be camping with my three scouts on Saturday night.  If you're planning on going, please let me know, so I can get a rough idea of how many scouts will be camping.

You will need to provide your own tent and sleeping supplies, along with your own food and drinks (and anything you might need to prepare your food).  There will be a campfire in the evening.  Here's a list of some other things you might not want to forget:
  • Scout uniform shirt (we will have a flag retirement ceremony after sundown)
  • Camp chairs
  • Flashlights
  • Extra clothes
  • Towels (where there is water, there will be wet Scouts)
  • Outdoor games/activities/sporting equipment
  • Leave the electronics at home (or in the car)!
There is no charge for camping, and firewood will be provided.

You will be able to park and unpack your car at the campsite, so speaking from experience, it is much better to have too much than not enough!

Finally, the Boy Scouts of America have a few rules that we must always enforce on any overnight Scout event:
  • No alcohol or tobacco products are allowed.  If you must use tobacco, please do so out of site of any kids other than your own.
  • No youth is permitted to sleep in the tent of an adult other than his or her own parent or guardian.
  • One-on-one contact between adults and Scouts is prohibited.  There must be at least two adults present when you are with any child other than your own.
  • For more information on Safe Scouting, please follow this link: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS.aspx
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  I hope to see you all there!

May 15 - Crossover Ceremony

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

On Wednesday, May 17, we will hold our Annual Pack 327 Crossover Ceremony for all the boys advancing to the next rank.  The ceremony will be held at 7:00 PM in the St. Albert Courtyard, between the church and school, near the flagpole.  This is our final Pack meeting for the 2012-2013 school year.

All of the boys in our den have received their Tiger Badge and are eligible to advance to in rank to Wolf.  Hopefully, all of our scouts will be continuing on, but if you do not plan on participating in Cub Scouts next year, or if you will not be able to attend the ceremony, please let me know ASAP.

If your Scout will be continuing on and you will be participating in the ceremony, here a few things you need to know:
  • An important part of the ceremony is the changing of the neckerchiefs.  During the ceremony, you, as your scout's adult partner, will remove his orange Tiger neckerchief and replace it with the yellow Wolf neckerchief.  You can purchase a new yellow Wolf neckerchief and slide at the Scout ShopsPlease do so before the ceremony on Tuesday!  If you will not be able to make it to the Scout Shops before next Wednesday, please let me know.  I will be going to the store and can pick one up for you, but you will have to reimburse the Pack for the cost.  It is preferable if you just buy your own.  While you're at the store, you may want to also pick up a Wolf Handbook.
  • We will be serving cake at the end of the ceremony.  Please bring a 2 liter drink to share.
  • If you have any camp cards or money to be turned in, this is your last chance to do so.  Please bring them with you.
I have truly enjoyed working with all of the boys this year in the Tiger Den.  It was a pleasure getting to know each of you and your families.  We have a great group of boys, and I'm looking forward to sharing many more wonderful scouting experiences with you all in the years to come!

See you all on Wednesday!

April 28 - Go See It: Big Four Bridge & Chow Wagon

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

Our final Go See It for this school year will be this Sunday, April 28, at 5:00 PM at the Big Four Bridge in Waterfront Park.  After walking the bridge, we will go as a group to the Chow Wagon, for anyone who is interested in staying for dinner.

We'll meet at the bottom of the bridge and walk as a group.  Please have your scout wear his uniform. Of course, everyone is welcome, so bring the whole family!  In case you're not aware, dogs are now banned from the bridge, so unfortunately Fido will have to stay at home.

If you're planning on sticking around for the Chow Wagon, you may want to go ahead and buy yourself a Derby Festival Pin before you get there.

See you all at the bridge!

The boys do not need to wear their uniforms.  Don't forget to bring some water for you and your scout.

March 9 - Go See It: Lowe's (Hurstbourne)

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

Our next Go See It will be this Saturday, March 9, at 10:00 AM.  We will be going to the Lowe's, located at 501 S. Hurstbourne Pkwy, for the Monster Jam Build & Grow clinic!  The kids will get to build the Monster Mutt monster truck, so it should be a lot of fun.  And it's free!

We do have to register in advance, but I've already taken care of that and registered our entire den.  If you are NOT going to be able to attend, please let me know via e-mail.

Also, even though we have a reservation, the store recommends that we arrive early to ensure that each child registered gets a car to build.

See you all then!

First, congratulations to all the boys for achieving the rank of Tiger, and congratulations to you, their adult leaders, for helping them along the way! Don't forget to keep working on those electives in the back of the handbook with your Tiger Scout, so that he can continue to earn Tiger Track beads to put on his totem.

February 12 - Den Meeting

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

Our February Den Meeting will be held next Tuesday, February 12, at 6:30 PM in the basement of Hendricks Hall.  Brian C. (Elliott's dad) will be organizing our activity.

As a reminder, all of our boys should be on track to receive their Tiger Badge at the Blue & Gold Banquet on February 24.  In order to receive his Tiger Badge, each boy must complete all 15 of the achievements described in the 5 chapters of the Tiger Handbook

Before our den meeting on Tuesday, please work on completing the 5 at-home family achievements and catching up on any of the other den activities or Go See Its you may have missed.  For a complete list of the achievements, you may refer to your handbook or the Achievements and Electives page on our den website:

http://pack327tigers.blogspot.com/p/achievements-electives.html

Also, I need to know which belt loops your scout would like to receive at the banquet.  As I mentioned at our last meeting, the Pack will pay for 5 belt loops each year.  You may send my your list via email. For a list of the belt loops and to see the requirements for each (click on the picture of any specific belt loop to the requirements), you may follow this link:

http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/cubscouts/parents/awards/cubscoutacademicsandsportsprogram.aspx

Finally, I've been informed that your Blue & Gold Banquet reservations ($10 per family) must be turned in by the 19th.  You may turn your money in to me at the meeting next week, or you may send it via kidmail per the flyer that was emailed previously.

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.

See you all at the Den Meeting on Tuesday!

January 29 - Den Meeting

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

This month's den meeting will be on TUESDAY, January 29th, at 6:00 PM 6:30 PM in the basement of Hendricks Hall.

Don't forget that this Saturday is the Pinewood Derby!  Our race time is 10:30 AM.  You MUST be weighed and checked-in NO LATER than 10:30, so please arrive early.

January Upcoming Events

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a good holiday. I know you haven't heard from me in a while, so I just wanted to send out a quick note on upcoming events.

I've tentatively scheduled our next den meeting for 1/28 at 6:30 PM in the basement of Hendricks Hall. Our next Go See It will be to the Courier-Journal, but we're still working on firming up that date. I'll send out more detailed information on both dates soon.

Don't forget that the Pinewood Derby will be on Saturday, 1/26, with weigh-ins (optional) the night before on 1/25. Stay tuned for more information on that as well.

Finally, don't forget to work on catching up on missed achievements in the Tiger Handbook, especially the at-home family activities. Hopefully by the time we have our Blue & Gold Banquet next month, everyone has completed all three achievements in each of the five chapters, so that each boy can receive his Tiger Badge.
