April 28 - Go See It: Big Four Bridge & Chow Wagon

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

Our final Go See It for this school year will be this Sunday, April 28, at 5:00 PM at the Big Four Bridge in Waterfront Park.  After walking the bridge, we will go as a group to the Chow Wagon, for anyone who is interested in staying for dinner.

We'll meet at the bottom of the bridge and walk as a group.  Please have your scout wear his uniform. Of course, everyone is welcome, so bring the whole family!  In case you're not aware, dogs are now banned from the bridge, so unfortunately Fido will have to stay at home.

If you're planning on sticking around for the Chow Wagon, you may want to go ahead and buy yourself a Derby Festival Pin before you get there.

See you all at the bridge!

March 9 - Go See It: Lowe's (Hurstbourne)

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

Our next Go See It will be this Saturday, March 9, at 10:00 AM.  We will be going to the Lowe's, located at 501 S. Hurstbourne Pkwy, for the Monster Jam Build & Grow clinic!  The kids will get to build the Monster Mutt monster truck, so it should be a lot of fun.  And it's free!

We do have to register in advance, but I've already taken care of that and registered our entire den.  If you are NOT going to be able to attend, please let me know via e-mail.

Also, even though we have a reservation, the store recommends that we arrive early to ensure that each child registered gets a car to build.

See you all then!

March Upcoming Events

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

First, congratulations to all the boys for achieving the rank of Tiger, and congratulations to you, their adult leaders, for helping them along the way! Don't forget to keep working on those electives in the back of the handbook with your Tiger Scout, so that he can continue to earn Tiger Track beads to put on his totem.

Next, I'd like to thank Brian C. (Elliott's dad) and the Erik F. (Joshua's dad) for planning our February den meeting and Go See It.  I think we all had a lot of fun!

The fun will continue in March!  Here are some dates to put on your calendar:

501 S. Hurstbourne Pkwy
10:00 AM

March 13: Pack Meeting - K-9 Unit

I'll send out reminders and more details as the dates get closer.

November 17 - Go See It: UofL Ice Hockey

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

This is a reminder that our November Go See It is tomorrow, November 17, at 4:00 PM.  We will be going to watch the UofL Ice Hockey team take on Notre Dame at the Iceland Sports Complex, located at 1701 Ups DriveThis is Achievement 3G in the "Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe" chapter of the Tiger Handbook.

The cost of the game is only $5 per adult (children under 12 are free), so bring the whole family!  If you've never been to an ice hockey game before, please keep in mind that you will be sitting relatively close (probably on metal bleachers) to a very large sheet of ice - it's gonna be cold!  So, be sure to bring a coat and gloves to wear for the game, no matter what the weather may be outside.

In order that we may sit together as a group, please arrive early - NO LATER THAN 3:45 PM.

And don't forget, our next den meeting will be on Monday, November 26, at 6:30 PM.

See you all at the game!

November 14 - Pack Meeting: Chili Cook Off

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

This is a reminder that we will have our November Pack Meeting this Wednesday, November 14, at 7:00 PM in Visitation Hall (cafeteria).  The St. Xavier eXpress improv troupe will be on hand to entertain us, and we will be having our annual chili cook off.

The Chili Cook Off is less of a cook off and more of a put luck supper.  Just bring your best pot of chili to share with the rest of the pack.  Also, please bring a 2 liter soft drink to share.  Plates, cups and utensils will be provided, but please do bring a serving spoon or ladle for your chili.  You may also want to bring along whatever condiments you like to serve your chili with (noodles, rice, crackers, cheese, hot sauce, etc.).  Lastly, since there are not enough electrical outlets to go around, don't expect to be able to plug in your slow cooker - bring your chili already heated and ready to serve.

Not a much of a chili chef?  Come anyway!  You do not have to bring chili to attend this meeting.

And here are some reminders for the rest of the month.  Please note that due to St. Albert being out of school all of next week, our November den meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, November 26.

November 17 - Go See It: UofL Ice Hockey vs. Notre Dame
Iceland Sports Complex
4:00 PM

November 26 - Den Meeting
Hendricks Hall
6:30 PM

See you all on Wednesday!

November 10 - Scouting For Food

Dear Tiger Cub Akelas,

This Saturday, November 10, our den will be helping the rest of Pack 327 distribute Scouting For Food fliers in the neighborhood around St. Albert's.  We will meet at Hendricks Hall (kindergarten building) at 9:00 AM to get our maps and fliers and to split up into small groups.

In the fall of each year, the Boy Scouts of America go from house to house in neighborhoods all over the country collecting food items for those in need.  It is the job of our Cub Scout Pack to distribute the fliers, and the Boy Scout Troop 327 will pick up the donated items a week later.

This is an important, high-visibility community service project, so I hope you all will be able to participate.  After we finish distributing the fliers and return to St. Albert's, the popcorn orders should be ready for pickup.

Here are some other upcoming events we have scheduled for the month of November.  Keep an eye on your e-mail inbox for more details:

November 14: Pack Meeting - St. Xavier eXpress - Chili Cook Off
Visitation Hall - 7:00 PM

November 17: Go See It - UofL Ice Hockey vs. Notre Dame
Iceland Skate Park - 4:00 PM

September 29 - Go See It: Louisville Free Public Library

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

It was great seeing everyone at the meeting on Monday! The first meeting of the year always seems a little chaotic, since there's so much information to cover, but don't worry. The rest of our meetings will be a little bit more laid back and a lot more organized.

Remember that our first Go See It will be this Saturday, September 29th, at the Main Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library at 3:00 PM.  The library is located downtown at 314 York Street.

Our host from the library will be Catherine Braganza, and she'll be meeting us in the children's section.  We'll have story time and a tour of the library, and possibly even a scavenger hunt!  Our visit should last about an hour, and like most of our Go See Its this year, other siblings and family members are welcome.

In the next couple of days, I'll be sending out another e-mail recapping some of the things we covered at the first den meeting.  And as always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Julia or me.

See you Saturday!

Mark Hiland

Upcoming Events

Dear Tiger Cub Parents,

Below are the details of our upcoming events.  I'll send out separate reminders as each date gets closer.

Wednesday, September 19th - First Pack Meeting

We will be holding our first Pack Meeting to kick off the new Scouting year with a great event that all the boys and parents really love!  We'll be launching water bottle rockets in Warwick Park (off Washburn Ave.), starting at 6:30 PM.  We'll stay as long as the fun lasts, or the sun goes down, which ever comes first.  You do not have to stay for the entire time, but I encourage everyone to attend this event.  It really is a lot fun!  If you have flag football practice that evening, I encourage you to come by after practice is over - that's what my boys will be doing.  The only thing you'll need to bring is an empty two-liter bottle (and maybe a towel).  Your son may want to decorate his bottle ahead of time, or at least put his name on it.

Monday, September 24th - First Den Meeting

We will have our first Den Meeting on Monday, September 24th, at 7:00 PM in the basement of Hendricks Hall (the kindergarten building).  At this meeting we'll be completing our first achievement in the "Making My Family Special" chapter of the Tiger Handbook (Achievement 1D - Make a family scrapbook).  Please bring an empty three-ring binder with you and a family photo(s) to place in it.  Also, before this meeting, please complete the "Trail to Bobcat" beginning on page 29 of the Tiger Handbook with your son at home.

Saturday, September 29th - First Go See It

Our first Go See It will be to the Main Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library.  We will be completing Achievement 1G in the Tiger Handbook with a special storytime, tour of the library and scavenger hunt.  We'll be meeting in the children's section of the library at 3:00 PM, and our visit should last about an hour.

Please remember that on the days of our Pack Meetings and Den Meetings, your son may wear his Cub Scout uniform to school.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  I look forward to seeing you all at Warwick Park on Wednesday!

Sincerely,

Mark Hiland
